Why I started this blog - My story about Nicholas

April 16th, 2008

My son was born July 2006, while on formula milk he fell into the 75-95 percentile in height and weight. When it came time to switch him toward a regular milk product we thought that by selecting an organic milk brand that we were making a good conscience decision because of the common thread in today’s America that organics is the healthy way to live, no matter the product.

When we switched him to Organic Milk (brand) thinking we were doing the best thing for our baby boy, we noticed over the next few visits to the pediatrician’s office that he was sliding down the comparative scale on height and weight for his weight measurement, but was maintaining his position on height and head circumference.

We began to notice that he was slimming at 16 months, I thought this was normal because our family is tall and slender, but our son Nicholas finally stopped gaining weight all together at 27 pounds for about 2 months, then it happened.

By chance I was in a conversation at a local coffee house when the subject of milk came up. What I was about to hear changed everything, and was just another confirmation of the how the want for money and clever marketing can cause big companies to turn a blind eye to the welfare of our children.

The story starts with organic milk being pasteurized at some 485 degrees, my initial thought was you have to be kidding, why would they boil the milk like this, how could anything beneficial survive this type of processing except maybe the calcium. So was I just feeding my boy “watered-down milk”? I would really like to know, but there is little available information on the subject.

Apparently there is research being done out there and word is floating around that “Yes!” the organic milk pasteurization process is breaking down most all the beneficial nutrients our children need. I’m just waiting for the research paper to be published on this, and see how in the world the organic marketers try to defend themselves.

Now for the rest of the story. I immediately switched to Borden’s “Naturally Produced” whole milk. Over the next 4 weeks my boy gained one pound, and over the next 2 months he gained THREE pounds, Wow, what a difference, he’s actually looking full again.

Now what prompted this blog. I was at a park with Nicholas where there were three other mother’s with their children playing, when I overheard the words “Organic Milk”. I apologized for interrupting, but had to tell them the story, then to my amazement, one of the mother’s said, “My little girl hasn’t gained weight in 5 months and I feed her organic milk!” I shared the story about what I had heard about the scientific research that was out there, but not yet public. I think there is little doubt this mother will switch her baby to “Naturally Produced Whole Milk”, I told her about Borden’s. I just wish I knew the outcome, would her little girl gain weight as fast as my boy did was the switch was made. So then I had the idea for this blog, maybe the mother will come across this and let me know how much weight her girl gained after her switch to naturally produced whole milk.

Do me a favor, email me with your story, or post it here in comments, if I get enough feedback I’ll develop a program (I happen to be able to do this) so that parents can track their baby’s weight gain or lack of gain from historical “Organic Milk” weights to gains from “Naturally Produced Whole Milk” weights. There’s got to be a class action lawsuit in this for some clever lawyers out there, it’s just a matter of time.
