I would recommend that you stop giving dairy products to your children at all. There are numerous health hazards associated with dairy consumption, especially for children. The idea that milk is any kind of health drink is major fraud in the nutritional sphere. Do you think milk is a good source of calcium? By products of milk digestion are uric and sulphruric acids with leach out what little and poorly digestible calcium there is in milk which is mostly water anyway. Some research suggests that drinking dairy products can actually cause osteporosis, because the animal proteins in the milk leach out the calcium from bones. Also, do you want to feed your growing son, a drink that is full of hormones from a female animal? Don't forget that bovine hormones in milk, at elevated levels because of the hormone injections, are identical to human growth hormone. These hormones with affect your son's growth, as well as find a nice resting place on whatever cancer cells they can find in your son's body and yours! Cheese is the worse because the ten to one ratio of milk to cheese needed to make cheese makes it a more more concentrated source of hormones. Synthetic Vitamin D added to milk is toxic to the liver. The following is a short list from an article by Michael Dye.
"Doctors say cow's milk can lead to iron deficiency anemia, allergies, diarrhea, heart disease, colic, cramps, gastrointestinal bleeding, sinusitis, skin rashes, acne, increased frequency of colds and flus, arthritis, diabetes, ear infections, osteoporosis, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and more, possibly even lung cancer, multiple sclerosis and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma."
There was recent documentary that came out called, Got the Truth About Milk.' Go to You Tube and type 'The Milk documentary - interview' and you'll get a 15 minute summary of the film.
Don't forget how bad animal husbandry is for the environment your son will be growing up in and losing if we continue keeping and raising animals.
Milk is not a super food, it's a super bad food.

Sunnygirl, thanks for your input, I'll try to post some links to useful research that will support the statements, but some of the research is new, I understand there was a scientific paper published by someone at Princeton University, I'm searching for it now. Here is how Horizon defines their pasteurization process for organic milk. It is not one company, but the whole process of pasteurizing milk at these temperatures that is coming into question.

http://www.horizonorganic.com/site/faq/products_org_milk_process.html

I had the same concerns about hormones and antibiotics, that's why we never gave our son that kind of milk. We now serve the whole family 'naturally produced' milk from Borden's.

I am sorry that you had such a scare with your son, and am glad that he is doing better.

I am surprised at your willingness to give all organic milk a bad name. I assume that you only found out about the pasteurization temperature for one brand of milk; which brand was it and where did you get the information? What about other brands of organic milk? What about brands of conventionally produced milk?

Some of us believe that the hormones and antibiotics present in conventionally produced milk pose a serious health risk to us and to our children.

The only milk my 17 month old daughter drinks is breast milk. She has gained only 7 ounces in the last 7 months. Our family doctor is not the least bit concerned with her slow weight gain. She looks (and is) healthy.

I hope that people will carefully consider the consequences of their food choices. I also hope that parents who read this will look carefully at their children's overall health before getting scared that they aren't gaining enough weight. Obesity is a growing problem in our children -- we want them healthy, but not too chubby.

We only gave him formula and baby cereal, but we did add fish oil to his cereal from the time he began taking solids, we had asked our pediatrician before doing so, and she had no problems with doing that. We found a lot of research that showed a strong correlation between omega-3 (from the fish oil) and a child having better problem solving skills. Since then I've had some reservations, but only in a humorous way, since he seems to be able to figure out all kinds of ways to get to things that we would never have thought possible.

Do you give your child additional vitamins with his milk? My daughter has my 14 mo old grandson on Organic milk but also has him on additional vitamins...however, I have noticed him not feeding well the past two weeks. Last night, as they were visiting me, he woke me up kind of whining and then threw up "soured" milk. After relieving his stomach of its contents, he finally went to sleep. I am getting a little concerned. I am not up on all this "organic" stuff...having raised my child on "regular" food. Thanks for your article.
